The application of Artificial Intelligence in a public management context features a wide range of highly relevant potential. This potential includes tackling classic challenges of managing government bureaucracies, such as reducing costs and improving accuracy. The ability of Artificial Intelligence applications, such as Machine Learning, to quickly and accurately identify patterns in large swathes of data, can for example greatly reduce the costs and time necessary for public agencies to process citizen applications of welfare benefits. Moreover, the increased accuracy of AI-supported decision-making can also potentially reduce the biases or corruption that may taint the judgement of policy-makers and bureaucrats. In addition to these classic goals of public management, AI applications also feature the potential to support the development of altogether new public services and new forms of citizen engagement.
